Finnair changes its fleet structure

Finnair has sold the last two MD-11 aircraft that it still owned to Neff Air.

The aircraft – one of which has been converted to a freighter and flies between Helsinki and the Far East, while the other is expected to also soon be modified to the freighter configuration – will be delivered to the US aircraft lessor in January next year.

However, the Finnish flag-carrier has said that it may lease back either one or both of the aircraft to operate them in a dedicated cargo capacity.

Finnair has also revealed it expects to acquire two A340s on lease from ILFC, expecting them to be delivered in late 2010 or early 2011.

Finnair president and CEO Mika Vehviläinen noted that – as well as boosting passenger operations into Asia – the A340s would "bring additional capacity to meet the needs of Asia's strengthening cargo demand".
