East Midlands Airport has a modern passenger-friendly terminal and offers a wide range of scheduled & charter services to cities & resorts throughout Europe. These are operated by bmibaby, bmi regional, Eastern Airways, Jet2, Ryanair, Thomson and Thomas Cook. East Midlands is the second largest cargo airport in the UK after London-Heathrow and the UK's No 1 "pure cargo" airport. DHL has a huge half million sq ft facility at the airport and TNT, UPS and Royal Mail all have major sorting facilities on site. Long haul services operate to & from USA and Middle East. EMA has 28 dedicated freighter aircraft stands, ranging in size from AN225 to B737. The airport is equipped to handle the B747-8F and has hosted five visits of the AN225. The airport operates 24 hours a day with no runway or airspace slot restrictions. Over 100 acres of undeveloped land are earmarked for future cargo related facilities. The UK Government White Paper on Aviation recognises the importance of EMA as a UK cargo hub and envisages an annual throughput of 2.5 million tonnes by 2030 with over 60,000 cargo movements, mostly at night. Centrally located in the heart of the UK at a major motorway interchange, with most major UK cities within 3-4 hours trucking distance, EMA is the ideal consolidation and distribution cargo gateway. It has the UK's sixth longest runway and planning permission has been granted for an extension to 3080m.
